2008 Donruss Threads: Frank Howard Rainbow

One of the card sets that I see a lot of is the 2008 Donruss Threads, at least the base cards from it. I still don't have a complete set but I will someday. I have a least 6 of the Frank Howard base card, maybe more if one or two are hiding in an uncatalogued pile somewhere in my card hoard. Anyway there is a Frank Howard rainbow to build and I'm going for it of course, minus any GUs I don't like those so my rainbow will not be a true "Master" set rainbow, just a mini rainbow. Not sure how many more to go but I'm pretty sure there is an autograph version. Here is what I have:

Then we have the Emerald (or Green) parallel serial numbered to /250 I don't recall where I purchased it from. Maybe from another forum member somewhere. I don't think it was from Ebay but might have been.

Then we have my most recent purchase from Ebay for $1.99 plus $1.99 shipping the SP Silver Parallel Serial Numbered to only /100. This one is #33 Frank's Jersey number from 1969 to the end of his playing career. I'm not sure if the seller was aware of that or even cared they didn't mention it. Some dealers try to milk more money out of you if they have the Jersey number or "Ebay 1/1" this one didn't thank goodness. it is "sealed" in it's toploader not sure if the dealer did that or it came that way?

UPDATE: I double-checked the image from the auction and it was shown raw out of any casing so the little silver dot sticker is from the dealer. I could have removed it from the toploader for scanning if I wanted or needed to.

Curly W Team Sets Project

Man oh man oh man. I really gotta get off my duff on this project (and a bunch of other projects in my life). Just about every team card collector at some point needs a complete listing of the cards they need to complete a team set. I'm looking for the basic base sets here, not necessarily the master sets. I'll cross those bridges when I get to them.

Of course the much older vintage team sets will be very difficult if not impossible to get, but I think a reasonable goal would be to at least get all the team sets from 1950 to 1971 for the Senators and for the Nationals 2005 and up. The main goal will be the flagship Topps, and Bowman sets when applicable. For the Nats I'm not sure about trying Upper Deck and Panini or whoever else has been in the game these last few years. Of course I will try getting Senators cards from before 1950 but I doubt I will be able to complete too many of those earlier sets.

I am working on a "Page" for my team set needs. On that page I am listing the sets by year with a tally of the cards I have from that set (ex. 10/12). My first few posts will be general decades, and then as I complete sets or get closer to completion I will post about them individually. My 1950s Team Sets List Post is almost ready to go.

OK so this week I'm only showing one Frank, but its my fave Frank Howard. This card I got from Ebay for cheap, well not so cheap it was lets see (looks up quickly on semi-recent card forum blog posts...) $10.19 +  $1.99 Shipping. 2011 Limited Greats Limited Autographs 29 Frank Howard Senators auto blue sharpie on sticker #d 007/299. When I got it I was a little disappointed because in the Buy It Now Auction listing it looked a lot BLUER than it really is. I guess the camera or scanner the seller used was set really bright, and reflected the light just right, probably was a camera. Anyway in addition to the fact that it was Frank Howard, and that it was an Auto, and that it was Leaf Limited (well Panini Limited) and that it was serial numbered, it was serial numbered to Kill 007 James Bond's number. If it was just plain old 7 I'm not sure I would have pulled the trigger on it as quickly as I did. I wish that Topps didn't have the official Monopoly licensing for baseball products. No team logos and just the name of the city is a huge reminder of that fact. Anyway here is the card enjoy.

I just noticed while looking at the scans that the "OF 33" on the back could almost be misinterpreted as coming from a small set of only 33 cards. Instead of standing for Frank's position and jersey number.
